As the summer heat cranks up, your HVAC system might struggle to keep up. You’ll have to give your HVAC system a bit of attention if you want it to perform at peak efficiency.
1. Check the Filter
If you haven’t been changing your filter regularly, now is the time to go check it. The frequency in which you need to change your filter will depend upon your personal circumstances.
Do you own multiple pets or live in an area with lots of pollen, dust, or pollution? Then you may want to change it every 3 weeks. If you don’t use your AC often and don’t have allergies, you can get away with waiting much longer before you need to change it.
It’s important to keep your filter changed because it protects your HVAC system from dust and debris, as well as you. The filter inside an HVAC system traps airborne pollutants and helps prevent them from circulating through your home.
2. Clean Condenser Coils
Turn the power off to your condenser. Next, spray the coils with water to remove dirt and debris. A dirty condenser coil will struggle to transfer heat to the outside air, making it less effective at cooling your home.
3. Clean Air Ducts
Over time, debris will build up inside the ductwork of your home. If ductwork has too much dust and debris clogging it, it will restrict airflow.
It’s best to have a professional clean the air ducts for you. Check to see if your local air conditioning and heating repair company offers preventative HVAC maintenance.
4. Keep Vents Unobstructed
If you want to get the most out of your air conditioner, make sure there aren’t any heavy pieces of furniture blocking any vents in your home. Heavy furniture in front of a vent can restrict airflow into your home. When a vent is blocked, it can create strain on the air conditioner and cause it to struggle to keep your home at the proper temperature.
5. Check the Electrical
Even an HVAC system needs its wiring checked every once in a while. Wires deteriorate from exposure or overheat at connector ends and degrade. If you see any wiring that has scorching, call a technician.
6. Refill Refrigerant Levels
As your air conditioner cools your home, it uses refrigerant. This refrigerant will eventually run low from use. There can also sometimes be leaks in the line, causing it to empty out faster.
7. Calibrate the Thermostat
Occasionally, a broken thermostat can lead to your HVAC system not working as intended. It might be unable to read the temperature in your home and thus fail to turn on to cool it off. A professional technician will be able to repair your thermostat and make sure it is properly calibrated.
